Alamogordo
Fun Things To Do with Kids in Alamogordo:
White Sands National Park - I have always heard that people are obsessed with White Sands and now I can see why! Giant white sand dunes in the middle of the desert?! So cool! Our kids had an absolute blast playing in the soft white gypsum sand and riding down the dunes on sleds. One day we had to leave because it got SO windy that it was actually miserable to be there with a sandstorm, especially with little kids, so be sure to check the weather before you go. It can also get really hot, so pack plenty of water. And don’t worry about what kind of shoes to wear - you won’t need them as you are playing on the sand dunes! But there are picnic tables all around, so pack a picnic lunch for your crew and play the day away! There isn’t much of a Junior Ranger book here, just short and sweet, but kids can still earn a Junior Ranger badge at this national park. Don’t miss the sunset at this national park - it’s really beautiful over the sand dunes.
Eat pistachio ice cream and see the giant pistachio at PistachioLand. This is definitely a touristy place, but dang the homemade pistachio ice cream was SO good it’s worth stopping for a post-White Sands play day treat! PistachioLand also has tons of gifts inside, several different flavors of pistachios (and you can taste test before you buy - my personal favorite was the dill pickle!), and tours of the pistachio farm. As touristy as it may be, it was actually a really fun afternoon stop.
Alameda Park Zoo - a small local zoo with great entry prices of only $5 per adult and $3 per kid (ages 4 and under free)!
New Mexico Museum of Space History - a unique stop for any kiddos who are space enthusiasts or a good indoor stop for a hot day to keep the kids entertained.
Where we stayed: Boot Hill RV Resort - this is definitely not a resort, it’s just a no-frills RV Park. We probably wouldn’t stay here again because there isn’t too much to do in the area other than the activities listed above, but it was a safe and clean stop with full hook-ups that was reasonably priced. We didn’t see any kids here and there wasn’t a playground or any games, so overall it was a bit of a boring location for the kiddos.
Yummy treat stop: Nena’s Ice Cream & Snack Bar - this one is off the beaten path, but a great spot for a cold, unique treat to beat the heat! The mangos and crema was a fam fave.
