Curious about RV life?
We get asked a lot of questions about our current choice in lifestyle – and we get it, it’s different! I think some people thought we were joking when we first told them, and some days I still can’t believe that we actually made the leap, but here we are! Here are the questions we get asked most frequently.
Don’t y’all get tired of each other living in that small of a space together all the time?
Sometimes, yes! We are only human, so prioritizing personal space and time is a lot harder in an RV than at home, so most likely at some point, one or more of your family members are going to get on your nerves. But overall, we are grateful for more time together. Which leads me to…Why did y’all decide to do this?
More time together! We felt like we were running a rat race all the time and not having any quality family time. Between the husband working his own business from home and my week day and weekend shifts, we felt like we would maybe get one day a week of all-day family time. It was exhausting and why? To be so tired all the time that we don’t even enjoy each other? The house, the schedules, the jobs all felt overwhelming, so we decided to downsize it all and prioritize family over all else. How do you work remotely on the road?
This one can take some creativity. We don’t have adesignated office in the RV, so when the husband is working, me and the kids mostly just stay outside and then we work our adventures into his work schedule. We find RV parks that have reliable wifi as well.Do you think you will ever go back to living in a house?
Who knows! Right now we are really enjoying RV life and plan to just see where it takes us. Our original plan was to only travel for ayear and then go back home for our son to start kindergarten. The deeper we get into our RV journey, the less we can picture ourselves going back to our “old lives” right now. We feel like our kids are still young enough to enjoy the adventure and make friends on the road, and we want to hang out with them while they still like us and think we are cool!Do you plan to homeschool?
For now, that’s the plan. I’ve been doing a ton of research into homeschooling and meeting other homeschool families is encouraging that we can do this! What do you do when something breaks?
Luckily, Jimbo is very handy and can fix just about anything, but I wouldn’t recommend getting into this lifestyle if you don’t have someone handy traveling with you, because things can break frequently and they often do.What is your favorite place that you have been?
This is a tough one! Every place we have been so far has been beautiful or unique in its own way. We love the mountains, but we both agree that we aren’t cold weather people and truly we prefer beach over mountains (don’t hate on us, we still love the mountains too, just don’t want to live there forever!). We both have said that the Florida Keys is a favorite for us.Do you get tired of washing dishes by hand?
What a silly question – yes! It’s honestly the one part of RV life that we don’t enjoy. But there are so many pros, that it’s a small sacrifice.Do you get annoyed at having a small kitchen?
Sometimes, yes. But honestly, we don’t feel all that limited in things that we can cook in the RV. Sometimes the oven takes a little longer than the recipe says, but we still bake bread and other things from scratch, make homemade snacks and cook most of our meals like normal. What is your least favorite thing about living in an RV?
For me, the dishes. For Jimbo, probably having to constantly fix something, haha! Are travel days stressful?
They can be. It depends on how far we traveling for that day. We try to not go more than 4-5 hours because that is about all the kids can handle riding in the car, but we also try to be prepared with lunch/snacks/toys/games/etc.How do you find campgrounds to stay at?
We use RV Life. It’s a great tool to filter your search, save your trip itinerary, put in your rig specifications and map the best route based on your rig size. It also lets you know gas stations along your route that you rig can fit into. What is your favorite thing about RV life?
Going to new places every few weeks. America is beautiful and has so many amazing places to explore. Yes, we also enjoy traveling internationally, but there is also so much we haven’t seen and done right here! How did you find your RV?
See our post on “Selecting the Right RV for your Family.” We mostly used RV Trader, at least, that’s where we started to give us an idea of what we wanted and then we went from there once we knew what floorplan we wanted to focus on looking for.Do the kids enjoy it?
They seem to! The one-year-old is living her best life and she doesn’t even know it! We do get sad to think that she won’t remember all of the amazing places that we are going right now, but we take lots of pictures and we hope that we are fostering her to have an adventurous spirit. Our 5-year-old loves it – he gets to explore outside mostly all day, go to new places, make new friends and only spend an hour a day doing school instead of being stuck in a classroom all day! Some days he does say that he misses his friends at home, and that’s really tough, but he also knows he is getting to live a life that the majority of kids don’t get to, which is pretty special.
