Savannah

Savannah is a beautiful city with rich history, romantic iconic trees, amazing restaurants, and picturesque city squares. We are not always “city people” but we definitely recommend a visit to Savannah.

7 of Our Favorite Things To Do with Kids in Savannah:

  1. Explore Savannah’s squares and learn about Savannah’s history along the way. Savannah’s city is uniquely structured around these 22 amazingly beautiful squares and parks, and was planned this way from its’ founding in 1733. It was fun to walk from square to square to see a great deal of the city and also experience how each square is different. If you are a Forrest Gump fan, be sure to visit Chippewa Square as it is the site of the iconic scenes from Forrest Gump sitting on the bench telling his story to all those waiting for the bus. The bench has since been moved to the Savannah History Museum, but you can still recognize the area from the movie scenes.  *stroller friendly

  2. Play at Forsyth Park. This may have been my favorite part of Savannah. It’s an iconic location, sure, but getting a coffee, walking to the park and playing with the kids at the two large playgrounds in the park was just so relaxing and enjoyable. We all loved it and Forsyth Park just feels like such a peaceful and magical place. *stroller friendly

  3. Stroll Savannah’s Plant Riverside District along the Savannah River. This is a great area that has been revamped with so many interesting restaurants, entertainment, shops and galleries. Don’t forget to stop at Byrd’s Cookies for samples and a delicious treat! *stroller friendly

  4. While at the Plant Riverside District, stop into JW Marriott Savannah Plant Riverside District to see some amazing dinosaur fossils and gemstones. Our kiddos loved walking around this hotel just to see all of their unique decor!

  5. Visit Fort Pulaski National Monument. In 1862, Fort Pulaski was the site where the Union Army successfully tested a rifled cannon during the American Civil War. The fort is expansive and really cool to explore. We used it as a homeschool history day and you can also earn a Junior Ranger badge here! *stroller friendly

  6. Visit E Shaver Booksellers. This is one of the most adorable bookstores I’ve ever been in! So many unique book selections and each room is organized by genre. The kids book nook section had a rug and beanbag chair and my 5 year old could have stayed here all day! Oh and there are cats roaming around too! It’s the kind of bookstore that just makes you want to read and I couldn't have loved it more.

  7. Eat at The Pirate House! This location near the Savannah River was originally an inn that became a meeting spot for pirates and sailors in the 1700s! The history of The Pirate House is so fun to learn about while you are dining. They have pirate hats and eye patches for the kids and even fun themed drinks from the kids menu! We dined here for our son’s 5th birthday dinner and he loved it! Be sure to keep an eye out for the ghosts of pirates - so the legend goes, many have been seen!

Where we stayed: CreekFire RV Resort. This is a great RV resort for kids! A playground, heated pool & hot tub, small water park area for littles, lazy river, outdoor games and crafts/activities throughout the week. We were here in January, so we didn’t get to take full advantage of the waterpark area and pool activities, but it is still a great place to stay for families. Additionally, there is a large pond with a nature walking trail, a workout room, a small store and a restaurant on the pond.

Restaurant spotlight: Crystal Beer Parlor - If you’re in downtown Savannah, this is a seriously cool stop for lunch. The history of the Crystal goes back to the early 1900s and it was even one of the first eating establishments in America to serve alcohol after Prohibition! The decor on the inside is a homage to their history and the bar is expansive with so many unique beers available. The food is delicious with some southern staples and overall just a really fun experience. But get there early - the wait was a little long for prime time lunch hours.
