Guadalupe Mountains National Park
We did Carlsbad Caverns National Park and Guadalupe Mountains National Park in one day because that was all the time we had in the area, due to some inclement weather delaying us on our drive to here from Texas. So, it wasn’t our original plan (but RV life will teach you to roll with the punches!), but this is definitely doable if you don’t mind a full day of activities as the parks are only about a 30-minute drive from each other.
We didn’t get to enjoy this national park as much as we could have, just because it was really windy and cold, and after already having a full morning, our kids just weren’t really up for much more. So, we only did the The Pinery Trail from the Pine Springs Visitor Center to get a view of the landscape, history, and local flora. This hike was easy for the kids to do and is only 0.75 miles. This route is paved, so it is also stroller friendly.
With more time, we would have liked to enjoy another hike or two (and the main hike here is to the “top of Texas” by hiking up to Guadalupe peak, but it is a 8.5 mile strenuous trek, so that wasn’t in our plans with the young kiddos anyway but you might be up for the challenge!), but the weather just wasn’t really in our favor this time around. In hindsight, if you have the time, it’s best to dedicate a day to each of these national parks to really be able to enjoy them.
Don’t forget to pick up a Junior Ranger book at the visitor center and earn a badge!
